The Grammys : women, women, women 🇬🇧

Publié le 6 février 2024 à 11:53

This year, women were definitely ruling the Grammy Awards.

SZA was nominated in nine categories, Victoria Monét in seven, and Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Boygenius, Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish in six. Dua Lipa, Gracie Abrams, Laufey, Ice Spice, Kelly Clarkson, Joni Mitchell, Janelle Monáe, Lana Del Rey, Coco Jones, Doja Cat, Samara Joy or Kylie Minogue were also shortlisted.

This was already a victory, in a music industry historically very much sexist.

Music fans were highly waiting for this event to take place. On the 4th of February (in the US), we finally got to watch the Ceremony.

Taylor Swift won Best Album, setting a record ; the first artist to win this award four times. She also took home the Best Pop Vocal Album award and used her acceptance speech to announce her upcoming album to the fans.

Billie Eilish won Best Song Of The Year and Best Song Written For Visual Media with her Barbie song What Was I Made For.

Boygenius were given the Best Rock Performance award, the Best Rock Song one, and the Best Alternative Music award. My three little men highly deserved this recognition.

Miley Cyrus won Record of The Year and did not conceal her joy. Indeed, while performing « Flowers » she changed her lyrics and sang « started to cry then remembered, I JUST WON MY FIRST GRAMMY ! ». She was also given the Best Pop Solo Performance award.

Laufey took home the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Grammy and it made me so happy.

Victoria Monét won Best New Artist, Best RnB Album and Best Engineered Album Non-Classical, her first Grammys after three years of nominations. Coco Jones won Best RnB Performance, SZA won Best Progressive RnB Album, Samara Joy won Best Jazz Performance, Joni Mitchell won Best Folk Album and Kylie Minogue Won Best Pop Dance Recording.

Phoebe Bridgers ended up being the most winning artist of the night. She used her position to call out the ex-president of the Recording Academy (the academy behind the Grammys), Neil Portnow, who in addition to having said that women needed to do better to win Grammys, is accused of sexual assault. Phoebe Bridgers, on the red carpet declared ; « I know you’re not dead yet. But when you are, rot in piss ».

Because we are not colorblind here, I need to say how happy I am that so many black women were celebrated this night (they should be even more celebrated, all the time, everywhere).

Nevertheless, some snobs were noticed. Fans were especially disappointed that Lana Del Rey didn’t receive any Grammy. Since the 56th Grammy Awards Ceremony in 2014, she was Grammy nominated eleven times and NEVER won any award. Just like Jannelle Monae who since the 51th Grammy Awards in 2009 was nominated ten times and never got to take an award home.

I was also very much sad that Olivia Rodrigo didn’t get to win any Grammy since her last record was a 100% slay, her Grammy performance ate, and she was nominated six times this year.

It was still a very girl girly girls night and it’s everything I’m rooting for. This, of course does not mean that the industry is not misogynistic and racist anymore. We need to remember that the Grammys and every other award ceremonies are just a facade. But the signal sent are the right ones.
