Let me introduce Alice and me ✮

Hi, my name is Ana and when I was a child, my favorite movie was Tinker Bell.

How surprising, that I loved watching this animated film about a bunch of fairies supporting each other on their attempts to find their way in life ! I think being able to relate to female characters in movies has forever been important for me. And it grew into this huge passion of mine to always watch films and tv shows and analyse the movie industry through a feminist, women focused and overall progressive way. This is why I chose to name a blog about cinema, pop culture, women and representation after the first ever director, Alice Guy. Alice Guy lived between 1873 and 1968 and in 1896, with the idea that a camera can not only film workers getting out of a factory but also fictional stories, she built her own DIY set and made friends of her play in her first ever movie « La fée aux Choux » or « The Cabbage Fairy », in which a fairy takes babies away from cabbages. (It’s kinda fun to watch actually). Up until 1907 she made more than 200 movies and founded in 1910 with her husband Herbert Blaché the very successful Solax Company on the American East Coast, for which, and I absolutely love this anecdote, Ethel Barrymore worked (yes you read me right BARRYMORE like Drew Barrymore !!)

But since men wrote history, Alice’s name was quite forgotten and isn’t known by a lot of people.

Alice was French and so am I so you might be wondering why I’m writing in English and the answer is to practice because one of my big ambition is one day to be fluent in English and spending my nights watching Downton Abbey won’t make me achieve this,  even though I really feel like a british girl watching it without subtitles.

No worries if you can’t speak English though, I really want to create a bilingual blog in which half of the articles are in French.

Lastly, don’t forget that this is a girl’s blog, by a girl, for the girls, kiss, Ana ✬
